Using Windows Server 2008, as a desktop OS
Posted by admin on 23rd June , 2008Well, yesterday it seems I broke my Vista Business install (still not quite sure how this happened, but it did). Instead of just reinstalling it, I decided to try installing Server 2008 and using it as “Super Desktop OS”
There are a few articles floating around on the internet about it, I think the first time anyone said anything was Here, and after that a site dedicated to it sprung up Here. Because Vista and Server 08 are based on the same kernel, drivers and stuff are compatible with each other 99% of the time, so the Vista x64 drivers installed on my server 2008 x64 install no problem, same with everything else I tried.
When you first start it up, it looks like your typical server, bland graphics, disabled sound, etc. But as soon as you install the proper drivers, you can start enabling Aero, installing DirectX and everything else you normally do. By the time I was done, you can’t even tell it’s server 2008, Aero is enabled, and it all looks like Vista. As soon as I installed my video drivers and directx, I started up my vista install of unreal tournament that I backed up, and it played like a pro, you’d never know it’s a server
The system does definitely seem to be faster then Vista, probably because a lot of useless things were never enabled, and it’s designed to perform at top notch for use on a Server.
Anyway, if you want to try it out, check those two links up there, they pretty much cover everything you’d want to do. The only thing that server 2008 dosen’t have is readyboost, but I dont think many people use that anyway.
Using Windows Server 2008 as a Desktop OS…

Did you run into any hardware/software/drivers issues last couple of days while using WS 2008. I think I’ll try to make a dual boot for WS 2008.
Does it support DirectX 10?
Let me know if you can make it run MSN
Pjer: Nope, no problems at all, it’s run everything flawlessly for me
Rickasaurus, yes it does support directx10, I just went and downloaded it from the Microsoft site and it installed without a problem.
And Andre, it does work with MSN, you just have to get the installer itsself, not the auto downloader from msn.com. See http://www.win2008workstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=656#p656 for more information, it worked like a charm for me.
Sorry for taking so long to respond
hello…
